You can inspire lives

Oaxaca is one of the three poorest states in the country and has one of the highest rates of illiteracy of Mexico. Also in the 2013 international PISA tests (Program for International Student Assessment) in 2013, Mexico ranked in the bottom of the list of OECD countries on tests of reading, mathematics and science.

Mexican adults read an average of fewer than two books per person (UNESCO 2005), while the average in countries like the United States is 12 books.

Reading promotes academic achievement and is the basis of learning. But due to the high cost of books in Mexico and the low investment in public libraries, access to books in Oaxaca it is limited. In Oaxaca, there are only 466 public libraries to meet 2,563 communities. The number is reduced when considering libraries that lack space dedicated for children and young readers.

Why support the work of Libros para Pueblos?

We provide access to books in urban and rural communities, especially for young people, involving parents, teachers and other community members in the process, in order to positively impact the medium and long‐term level of education in the state of Oaxaca and expand opportunities for the Oaxacan population to better living conditions.

What can your support do?

*800 Sponsor a Library!

Fully support a library for a $800 annual investment. (5 years commitment). With your donation we will deliver every year a package of new books to the library you sponsor.

*Support our Technology Program

Your investment provides sustainable technology programming including equipment and/or Internet.

*Support our Librarian Development Program

Due to the way that the governments work in our villages, i.e. with new governments every one, two or three years, our librarians hold their positions for very short times. We have created a team of dedicated experts called Regional Volunteer Coordinators, to visit the libraries in their regions to support the librarians and report on how the library is doing. They support the librarians by holding workshops for them designed to improve their results in attracting kids, teens and parents to the library and spread the use of programs to increase reading comprehension.

*Give any amount

Libros Para Pueblos buys more children's books than any other organization in southern Mexico. Because of this we receive the very best discounts available. Your dollar goes further with us. We can buy roughly double the number of books than an individual buying and donating them. This is why cash is almost always the best way to donate.

If you wish to discuss either of these, please contact Judith Marcial at j.marcial@librosparapueblos.org or call at +52 951 142 9600.

All donors will receive a U.S. IRS Acknowledgement Letter in January for the prior year’s total donations. If you wish to receive a receipt suitable for Canadian or Mexican taxpayers, let us know.
